Common Names – Spotted Boxfish, White Spotted Boxfish, Blue
Boxfish, Spotted Trunkfish
Aquarium Environment – The Blue boxfish is a fish that needs to be kept
with non-aggressive or boisterous tank mates. Blue Boxfish are commonly found
over coral reefs in their natural habitat. It is also possible to find them in
areas of sea grass. It is wise to include live rock as it will help to keep
excellent water conditions and it provides areas for foraging for the spotted
boxfish. Be sure to have a well decorated tank as your boxfish may become bored
and start swimming up and down the sides of the aquarium.
Other - Blue boxfish are the most likely to release their
poisonous and sometimes deadly ostracitoxin. It is vital that they be kept with
non-aggressive tank mates so that they will not feel the need to defend
themselves with their ostracitoxin. Also, if you value precious inverts or
corals, it is wise to test your boxfish on inexpensive corals or inverts. There
is a great difference between male and female blue boxfish. The males of the
species have blue sides and a black top with white spots. The females are all
black with white spots.
