Temperate in Short
Temperate marine: an oceanic biome located within the temperate belts encircling the earth. Temperate marine ecosystems sustain themselves with life giving nutrients that occur in seasonal blooms. Here, plankton form the basis of the food chain. Often considered dull and lifeless, temperate marine waters host a variety of habitats and species. Most notable is that of the kelp forest, the temperate equivalent of the coral reef. Many lifeforms from copepods to orcas can be found thriving in temperate oceans.

The difference between tropical and temperate aquaria: Temperate reef aquaria require temperate or chilled water, on average 50-70˚ Fahrenheit depending on the species kept. One key difference in the temperate hobby is the lack of corals in most home aquaria. This is due to the fact that temperate water corals are found in the deeper waters of the ocean, rendering them inaccessible. Most invertebrates kept our abundant in the intertidal regions of the ocean. A common misconception is to refer to temperate ecosystems and aquaria as "coldwater." To be "coldwater" would refer to the polar waters of the Arctic and Antarctic.
